cairo_towerIt is nice to see Cairo from an altitude. It gives you full geographical and historical perspective, a view of this great city with both its very modern and very ancient districts. One of the best views is from the Cairo Tower (Borj Al-Qahira in Arabic) which is located on Gezira Island in the district of Zamalek, just north of the Museum of Modern Art and the Opera House. It is 187 meters high -47 meters taller than the Great Pyramid at Giza- built in the form of a latticework tube that fans out slightly at the top imitating a lotus plant, and made of granite which is the same material often used by Ancient Egyptians.

al-azhar-mosque-egypt-cairoThe Mosque of Al-Azhar was established between 969 and 972 AD, founded by Jawhar Al-Siqilly, commander the Fatmides who ruled Egypt from 909 to 1171 AD. The name refers to Fatma Al-Zaharaa (daughter of Prophet Mohammed). It is located in Al-Hussein Square very close to the very popular Khan El Khalili Souk, and is considered to be the first Mosque in the new city of Al-Qahira (Arabic for Cairo).

Assembling furniture on location is an Egyptian invention, not Ikea's ! The four gilded shrines - where King Tut Ankh Amun's sarcophagus was finally laid - had to be assembled underground in his tomb. The shrines had symbols and marks to facilitate fitting them together. Tut had died at the age of 19 around 1324 B.C.
